Farmer's Wife Apron Game

Every year we have Family Harvest Day. I plan games for the kids, and the dad's play along too. But the mom's usually just watched. I decided we needed a game just for them. So, The Farmer's Wife Apron Game was born. Please excuse the not so great photos, they are from a few years ago. I keep forgetting to takes pics these days!

A Farm Wife's apron is a very important tool. An apron tied around a woman's waist could become useful in many ways besides keeping her clothing clean in the kitchen. Used to gather eggs, carry a mornings garden harvest to the kitchen. A handy pot holder, a towel to wipe wet hands or a fan to cool a hot face. A cloth to wipe a child's face, clean a skinned knee. Pockets hold more tools, clothes pins to hang the wash, a treat for Bessie as she is milked. Such an important tool every farm wife needs.

Here's how we play....The ladies are divided into teams of 2. The children of these ladies need to sit and wait for their morning breakfast while mom completes her 'chores'. To start the game, one needs to tie on an apron of course! Then the Farmer's Wife makes her way around the yard to areas set up to represent different morning chores trying to be the first one finished. There is the milking station; I used little Mac Donald's milk bottles to be filled with water in a bucket to represent milking.

Then mom must gather the eggs, plastic eggs in a basket, place them in her apron and move on to the next station.

Next is a basket of fake fruits and vegetables to represent a kitchen garden, one item for each child must be 'harvested' and added to the apron. If you drop anything you must retrieve it or your children will starve!

Once 'breakfast' has been gathered run to the kitchen station and using your apron as a pot holder place breakfast in a skillet and serve your hungry babes! Be sure to wipe messy faces with your apron!

Now grab your laundry basket and get those towels hung out to dry!

My, that was exhausting, give yourself a little fan with your apron as you rush back to the house. Game over!

The grandma's had a go at it too, we seemed to be the best at hanging laundry!

Well that was fun, and I'm glad the mommies got involved. The kids loved seeing their moms competing too! So, what else is an apron used for? Any ideas what I could add to make this game more fun? Do you use an apron?

  2. That is a really cute idea! I think the best part about it is probably the kids watching their mom's compete in the challenge.
