This is a home made gift I keep on hand when I need something quick to give to a child. It's called the Peanut Butter and Jelly Game. Super easy to make, of course, it's inexpensive too. (you know me :) Kids from about age 4 to 8 love this game; some 3 yr olds may understand how to play too. The directions here are for enough pieces for 4 players.
The objective is to build a sandwich. Taking turns, you roll the block. The block has 2 colors each for bread, peanut butter, and jelly. First you need bread, so your block must be on the color that is 'bread'. If you roll something else you must wait for your turn to roll again. After bread comes either peanut butter or jelly, then lastly bread again.
Get the kids involved and have them make this game with you. It will be a great self esteem builder. I have used felt to make these but you could use construction paper or card stock.
To make the game you will need felt in three colors. I much prefer the felt that comes on a bolt in the fabric store to the little squares you buy. It's a better quality usually and will last much longer. You won't need a lot, only 6-9 or so inches of each. Also a square block of wood, glue and scissors.
Make a template in a bread shape, and one slightly smaller for the jelly and peanut butter. Trace onto felt with a pencil and cut them out.
Trace around the block and cut out the felt pieces, 2 of each color. Generously apply glue to the surface of the block and press the felt square onto it. Make sure to glue to the edges. If you are making this game for a very small child make sure your block is large enough not to be a choking hazard. Glue all sides using the same color felt on opposite sides.
I chose to make a lunch bag to keep the game in but you could use a variety of things as a package. This material is felt backed oil cloth.
The label is paper attached with double sided tape. Place everything inside your
bag and now you have a fun easy and inexpensive game.
