Easy Bibs from Drop Cloth & Scraps

With a 7 month old, one on the way and three 3 year olds that still use bibs; I needed new bibs. It's super easy enough to make bibs, and I always have lots of scraps to choose from. I could have even used an old sheet, dish towel or shirt. I noticed a drop cloth scrap and I  remembered seeing that someone had drawn stripes on drop cloth to make it look like toweling. I decided to try that out. I choose some quilt scrap prints for the other side.

First I picked an old bib, folded it in half and lay it on a folded sheet of paper. My paper was a little small. If you want you can use larger paper or tape pieces together to get the size you want.

I traced the neck of the bib on the paper and cut it out. I didn't want the wings on my new bib so I cut the corner off, checked it and cut more till I was happy.

The paper was not as long as the bib so I added a note at the bottom to remind me to add 2 inches there. If you have not added a seam allowance to your paper pattern be sure to add it when you cut out your pieces.

Here's were I forgot to keep taking pics. So, cut 2 pieces of fabric for each bib....a front and a back. Place right sides together and sew around them leaving an opening for turning at the bottom. Turn right side out. Fold the raw opening edge in and sew closed. Iron flat and top stitch around the edges (optional but helps it to stay flat). Sew on a closure; I used hook & loop tape. (here's another tutorial if that helps)

Then on the drop cloth side of the bib I got out a permanent marker and ruler and added my toweling stripes. I set the marker with a hot iron and my bibs were finished. The stripes didn't last and faded after a few washings. Maybe fabric paint next time?

Because I used 2 fabrics, front and back, this bib is reversible. I could have used one piece of a heavy fabric and sewn binding around the edge. I saved time though by not binding it.
